What is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It spreads quickly through respiratory droplets or direct contact with the rash. Children are more prone to it, especially if not vaccinated. The illness starts with flu-like symptoms followed by a red, itchy rash that turns into fluid-filled blisters. While it is generally mild in children, adults can face more severe complications. Most people recover within a week or two, but isolation and hygiene are necessary to prevent its spread to others.

Causes of Chickenpox

Chickenpox is primarily caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is highly contagious and can spread through coughing, sneezing, talking, or direct contact with blister fluid. Being in close proximity to an infected person increases the chances of catching the virus, especially if the person is not vaccinated or has never had the disease before. The virus becomes active after an incubation period of 10–21 days, during which it multiplies and triggers the immune response that causes the symptoms of chickenpox.

Diagnosis of Chickenpox

Chickenpox is usually diagnosed through physical examination of the rash and blisters. A doctor may also ask about recent exposure to infected individuals or unvaccinated status. In rare cases or in adults, blood tests or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests may be done to confirm the presence of the varicella-zoster virus. Diagnosis is usually straightforward due to the distinct appearance of the chickenpox rash, which goes through several stages from red spots to fluid-filled blisters and eventually crusts.

Symptoms of Chickenpox?

Symptoms of chickenpox usually start with a fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite, followed by an itchy rash that appears in stages. Red spots develop on the body and quickly form blisters filled with fluid. These blisters later crust over and fall off. The rash typically starts on the face, back, or chest before spreading. Other symptoms can include body aches, headache, and general discomfort. Children may be cranky and show signs of tiredness and irritability during this period.

Treatment of Chickenpox

Chickenpox treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Antihistamines are used to control itching, while paracetamol helps reduce fever and body pain. Antiviral medications may be prescribed in severe cases or for individuals with weakened immunity. Calamine lotion and cool baths with baking soda or oatmeal can ease skin irritation. Patients are advised to avoid scratching to prevent scarring and infection. Drinking plenty of fluids and getting rest supports recovery. Children should stay home until all blisters have crusted to prevent spreading.

When to See the Doctor?

Seek medical attention if the fever is high, symptoms worsen, or complications appear like difficulty breathing or severe rash infection.

1. Persistent High Fever

If fever stays above 102°F for more than two days, it could indicate complications requiring urgent care.

2. Rash Becomes Infected

If blisters become red, swollen, or filled with pus, it might be a bacterial skin infection.

3. Child Becomes Drowsy

Extreme tiredness, confusion, or fainting could be a sign of complications such as encephalitis.

4. Breathing Difficulty

If your child struggles to breathe, seek emergency help immediately as it could signal pneumonia.

5. Not Eating or Drinking

Continuous refusal to eat or drink may lead to dehydration, needing doctor intervention.
