It’s used when blockages occur due to kidney stones, swelling, or post-surgical healing. The stent prevents urine buildup, reduces pressure on the kidney, and supports natural drainage until the underlying issue is resolved.
Double-J stents serve both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Temporary stents are used after stone removal or surgery to aid healing. Long-term stents are placed for ongoing conditions like chronic ureteral strictures or cancer-related obstructions. Stents vary in size, material, and duration based on the patient’s condition, symptoms, and whether they’re placed electively or during an emergency.
Ureteral blockages can arise from kidney stones, strictures (narrowing of the ureter), swelling after surgery, infections, or tumors. These block urine flow, potentially damaging the kidneys. In such cases, a double-J stent is inserted to keep the passage open, relieve pressure, and allow urine to drain effectively until definitive treatment or healing occurs.
Persistent flank pain, frequent urinary infections, painful or difficult urination, and visible blood in the urine can indicate ureteral obstruction. If these symptoms persist or worsen, doctors may recommend double-J stenting. Other signs like hydronephrosis (kidney swelling), post-operative ureteral swelling, or incomplete urine drainage after stone removal also make stenting a preferred intervention.
Doctors recommend imaging tests such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or X-ray to detect blockages in the urinary tract. Lab tests, including urine analysis, may reveal infection or blood. If urine flow is hindered or the kidney is under stress due to obstruction, double-J stenting is often advised to prevent further damage and preserve kidney function.
Under anesthesia, a doctor inserts the stent using a cystoscope—a thin tube with a camera—through the urethra into the ureter. The curled ends of the stent stay in place within the kidney and bladder. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, is minimally invasive, and is often performed as a day-care surgery without overnight hospitalization.
