What is Mastectomy Surgery?
Mastectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of one or both breasts to treat or prevent breast cancer. Depending on the condition, it may include partial, total, or radical removal of breast tissue.
Mastectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of one or both breasts to treat or prevent breast cancer. Depending on the condition, it may include partial, total, or radical removal of breast tissue.
Mastectomy is necessary for patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), or those at high risk due to genetic factors. It is also recommended when lumpectomy is not a viable treatment option.
Mastectomy procedures vary based on the extent of tissue removal. Common types include simple mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, radical mastectomy, skin-sparing mastectomy, and nipple-sparing mastectomy. Each type is chosen based on the patient’s diagnosis and treatment goals.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the type of mastectomy, the surgeon removes breast tissue, lymph nodes (if needed), and reconstructs the breast, if chosen. Recovery varies, but post-operative care focuses on pain management and healing.
Mastectomy is often required when a patient exhibits aggressive or invasive breast cancer, recurrent breast tumors, or has a strong genetic predisposition. It is also advised when radiation therapy is ineffective or not an option.
Although generally safe, mastectomy may pose risks like infection, bleeding, fluid buildup (seroma), numbness, lymphedema, and emotional distress. Proper post-surgical care and counseling help minimize complications and support mental well-being.
Key Signs Indicating the Need for Immediate Medical Evaluation
A new lump or an area of thickened tissue in the breast or underarm may be an early sign of breast cancer or a benign condition such as a cyst or fibroadenoma. While not all lumps are cancerous, it is essential to get them evaluated through a clinical examination, mammogram, or biopsy if necessary.
Occasional breast discomfort is common due to hormonal changes, but if you experience continuous pain, tenderness, or an unusual sensation in one or both breasts, it could indicate an infection, cyst, or in some cases, a developing tumor. Chronic or unexplained pain should always be assessed by a medical professional.
Spontaneous nipple discharge, particularly if it is bloody, clear, or occurs without squeezing, may be a sign of an underlying issue. Additionally, any visible changes in the nipple, such as retraction (inward turning), persistent sores, or thickening, should be checked, as they may indicate an infection, hormonal imbalance, or cancerous growth.
Any noticeable change in the texture or appearance of the breast skin, such as dimpling, puckering, persistent redness, swelling, or an “orange peel” effect, could be an indication of an infection or an aggressive form of breast cancer known as inflammatory breast cancer. These symptoms require urgent medical attention.
A family history of breast cancer, particularly in first-degree relatives like your mother, sister, or daughter, increases your risk of developing the disease. If multiple family members have had breast or ovarian cancer, particularly at a young age, you may benefit from early and more frequent screenings, genetic testing, and risk-reducing strategies.
Individuals with inherited BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations face a significantly higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. If you have a known genetic mutation or a strong family history suggesting a predisposition, consulting a doctor about risk-reducing measures such as preventive mastectomy, regular MRIs, or chemoprevention is essential for proactive care.
