What is Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy Surgery?

Ureteroscopic lithotripsy is a minimally invasive surgery to remove kidney or ureteral stones. A thin tube called a ureteroscope is inserted through the urethra and bladder to reach the stones. Laser or ultrasonic energy is used to break them into smaller pieces, which are then removed. It avoids any external cuts and has quick recovery time.

Types of Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy Surgery

There are two primary types are rigid ureteroscopy is ideal for stones in the lower ureter, while flexible ureteroscopy is used for stones in the kidney or upper ureter. Both types use laser technology to break stones into fragments, which are either extracted or left to pass naturally through urine. The method is chosen based on stone location.

Causes for Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy Surgery

Kidney or ureter stones may form due to dehydration, high calcium intake, urinary tract infections, or metabolic disorders. Poor fluid consumption, excessive salt, or certain foods can also lead to stone formation. When these stones are large, painful, or cause complications, ureteroscopic lithotripsy becomes necessary to restore urinary health and prevent kidney damage.

Symptoms Indicating Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy Surgery

You may need ureteroscopic lithotripsy if you experience severe flank pain, blood in urine (hematuria), frequent urinary tract infections, or urine flow blockage. Stones that don’t respond to medication or cause hydronephrosis (kidney swelling) are also indicators. Persistent discomfort or nausea from stone-related symptoms are signs to consider surgical stone removal.

Diagnosis for Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy Surgery

To diagnose the need for ureteroscopic lithotripsy, doctors perform imaging tests such as ultrasound, X-ray (KUB), CT scan, or IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram). These tests help determine the stone’s size, location, and number. If the stone is too large or stuck, or if it causes complications, surgical removal is advised. Urine tests may also be conducted.

Treatment for Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy Surgery

During the procedure, a ureteroscope is passed through the urethra and bladder to locate the stone. A laser fiber is used to fragment the stone, and small forceps or baskets may be used to remove fragments. The surgery is done under anesthesia and usually requires no incision, allowing quicker discharge and minimal downtime for recovery.
