What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It is not typically fatal but causes intense joint pain, high fever, fatigue, and rash. The symptoms appear within 3–7 days of the mosquito bite and can last for weeks. Joint pain may persist for months in some cases. Chikungunya primarily occurs in tropical and subtropical regions but can spread anywhere mosquitoes thrive. Prompt diagnosis and symptomatic treatment are essential to reduce discomfort and promote recovery.

Symptoms of Chikungunya

Chikungunya symptoms usually begin 3–7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The most common symptoms include high fever, severe joint pain (especially in hands and feet), headache, muscle pain, skin rash, fatigue, and nausea. The joint pain is often so severe that it hinders daily movement. Though symptoms can last a few days to a week, joint stiffness may persist for several months. Identifying these symptoms early allows patients to seek proper care and avoid complications.

Causes of Chikungunya

Chikungunya is caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), which is spread by two types of mosquitoes: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes are most active during the daytime, especially early morning and late afternoon. Chikungunya is not spread from person to person, but if a mosquito bites an infected person and then bites another individual, it can transmit the virus. Outbreaks often occur in areas with stagnant water, poor sanitation, and high mosquito density, especially after monsoon seasons.

Diagnosis for Chikungunya

To confirm Chikungunya, doctors may perform a physical examination followed by blood tests. The most common tests include RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) and serological tests such as ELISA to detect antibodies. Early diagnosis helps rule out similar conditions like dengue or Zika virus. A clear understanding of symptoms, travel history, and lab results allow for precise diagnosis.

Treatment for Chikungunya

There is no specific cure for Chikungunya, so treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Doctors often recommend rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen to manage fever and joint pain. Avoid aspirin to reduce the risk of bleeding. Severe cases may require corticosteroids or other medications under a doctor’s guidance. Physiotherapy may be needed if joint pain persists.
