What is Cytomegalovirus?
Cytomegalovirus, or CMV, is a virus belonging to the herpesvirus family. It spreads through bodily fluids like saliva, urine, blood, and breast milk. While CMV often causes no symptoms in healthy people, it can result in severe illness for those with weak immune systems and newborns. Once a person is infected, the virus remains in the body for life, often dormant. Reactivation can occur if the immune system becomes suppressed, which is why early diagnosis and monitoring are critical for at-risk individuals.
