This surgery intentionally destroys the atrioventricular (AV) node an electrical relay station in the heart. Once this is done, the patient is no longer able to rely on the heart’s natural conduction system and must receive a permanent pacemaker to regulate the heartbeat. This procedure controls symptoms but does not cure the arrhythmia.
  4. Surgical Atrial Flutter Ablation :- Atrial flutter is another type of arrhythmia that may be treated surgically when catheter ablation fails. In this procedure, the surgeon removes or cauterizes the tissue in the right atrium responsible for the flutter. This can be done as a stand-alone operation or in conjunction with other heart surgeries.
  5. Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Closure :- Patients with atrial fibrillation have a high risk of stroke due to blood pooling and clot formation in the left atrial appendage. Surgical closure or removal of the LAA is sometimes performed during arrhythmia surgery to reduce the risk of clot-related complications. This is often done in combination with a maze procedure or valve surgery.

Causes of Arrhythmia Surgery

  1. Structural Heart Disease :- Many arrhythmias are caused by underlying structural abnormalities in the heart, such as valve disorders, congenital defects, or scar tissue from previous heart attacks. These physical changes can disrupt the normal electrical pathways, leading to irregular rhythms that may eventually require surgical correction.
  2. Genetic Predisposition :- Certain inherited conditions, like long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, can lead to dangerous arrhythmias. In some cases, arrhythmia surgery is performed alongside coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) to address both the structural and electrical issues of the heart.
  4. Heart Failure :- Patients with chronic heart failure often experience arrhythmias due to the enlarged and weakened state of the heart. When medical therapy is no longer sufficient, surgery may be needed to correct the rhythm and improve pumping efficiency. This may include procedures like biventricular pacemaker implantation or surgical ablation.
  5. Failed Medical :- For some individuals, antiarrhythmic medications or catheter ablations may not be effective or well tolerated. In such scenarios, surgery becomes the most viable and lasting solution, especially when the arrhythmia significantly impairs quality of life or threatens survival.
